NAMIBIAN GOVT. TO PROMOTE ROADSHOW FOR GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECT

Dates for a National Green Hydrogen Roadshow have been revealed by the Namibian government and Hyphen Hydrogen Energy. Taking place from August to October 2023, the roadshow aims to foster interaction between government officials, Hyphen representatives, and diverse stakeholders nationwide. The objective is to share information about the Hyphen project and the newly introduced Socio-Economic Development (SED) Framework, which was inaugurated in Keetmanshoop.

The Hyphen project is being developed as the first step in the implementation of the government’s strategy to establish a large-scale green hydrogen industry in Namibia to spur economic growth in the country with a total investment of US$10 billion (about N$190 billion), slightly more than Namibia’s annual GDP.

Commencement date for  National Green Hydrogen Roadshow

Starting on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the roadshow is set to kick off in the Khomas region before embarking on a journey across significant towns within all 14 regions of the country.

The project is projected to generate approximately 15,000 employment opportunities during the construction phase and around 3,000 permanent jobs while in operation. The aim is for roughly 90% of these positions to be occupied by Namibian citizens.

Hyphen has set its sights on achieving a 30% rate of local procurement for goods, services, and materials across both construction and operational stages.

Toni Beukes, who leads ESG efforts at Hyphen, expressed enthusiasm about engaging with diverse stakeholders to provide deeper insights into the project. Additionally, Beukes emphasized the intention to address any queries, and concerns, and initiate transparent discussions about the project’s aspects, timelines, and objectives.

Obeth Kandjoze, the Director General of the National Planning Commission and chairperson of the Green Hydrogen Council will lead the roadshow engagements. Each regional governor, chairperson, and their respective constituency councilors will host the events, featuring presentations from Hyphen.

On a global scale, Hyphen’s project ranks among the largest green hydrogen initiatives. Its anticipated impact includes supplying and contributing to the decarbonization of Namibia’s energy systems, while also exporting green ammonia to international markets.

Hyphen is setting its sights on achieving an annual production level of one million tonnes of green ammonia by 2027, with aspirations to boost this figure to two million tonnes by 2029. This effort could lead to the reduction of 5 to 6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. In full operation, the project has the potential to yield 350,000 tonnes of green hydrogen every year.
